Your Pre-Departure Document Checklist

Relocating to Europe for work is exciting — but missing a single document at the airport can delay your journey by weeks. Use this checklist to make sure you’re fully prepared.

Essential Documents (Must-Have)

  • Valid passport — minimum 12 months remaining validity from your travel date
  • Work visa (Visa D/M) — issued by the Romanian embassy in your country
  • Employment contract — signed copy in Romanian and English
  • Work authorisation letter — original from the General Inspectorate for Immigration
  • Medical fitness certificate — issued within the last 3 months
  • Police clearance certificate — from your home country, apostilled
  • Educational certificates — originals + apostilled copies of trade qualifications
  • Passport-size photos — 6 copies (white background, 3.5×4.5 cm)

Financial Preparation

  • €500 minimum in cash or accessible funds for initial expenses
  • International debit card — Wise, Revolut or your home bank’s forex card
  • Copies of your bank statement (last 3 months)

Copies & Backups

  • Scan all documents and email them to yourself
  • Save digital copies on your phone and in cloud storage
  • Carry 2 photocopies of every document in a separate bag

Personal Essentials

  • Appropriate work clothing and safety boots for your trade
  • SIM-compatible phone (unlocked for European SIM cards)
  • Power adapter (Romania uses Type C/F, 230V)
  • Warm clothing if arriving in autumn/winter (temperatures can drop to -15°C)

On Arrival

Within 30 days of arrival, you must apply for your Temporary Residence Card (TRC) at the local immigration office. Your employer or recruitment agency should assist you with this process.
